Diabetes and Chiropractic Breakthrough Discoveries

Researchers finding connections between the spine and different illnesses are constantly growing. The spinal nervous system branches out to every muscle and organ of the body, so it should come as no surprise that there is a connection between blood sugar and the spine.

Research suggests that chiropractors may possibly start to have a hand in helping people with diabetes. Diabetes is the fifth deadliest disease in the United States and a growing epidemic worldwide. What does chiropractic have to do with blood sugar? Like I mentioned earlier, the spine affects the entire body, including the organs. If there is pressure on the nerve that stimulates the pancreas, its possible that its function suffers, which in turn means that blood sugar and digestion become affected. The outcome becomes diabetes or hypoglycemia.

To read about the recent case studies and how they are breaking through barriers of past thoughts on diabetes and what it means for those diagnosed, read the following article from

Congratulations! Finding out that you’re expecting a baby is thrilling for any mom-to-be. As soon as you see that pink plus sign, your body begins to change rapidly and taking the extra precautions to have a healthy pregnancy and labor are essential.

For the nine months of changes that your body goes through during pregnancy, specific scientific chiropractic adjustments come highly recommended as part of the extra care and preparation. Chiropractic care has only proven to show positive results and all chiropractors are trained to work with women who are expecting.

Pregnancy can create changes in the spine and joints, including increased back curve, pelvic changes and postural adaptations. If the pelvis becomes misaligned, this can create a difficult labor for both the mother and the baby. Specific chiropractic care can keep the entire nervous system, and body functioning properly. Some of the benefits of getting regular adjustments are:

- controlling symptoms of nausea

- reducing time of labor and delivery

- relieving back, neck or joint pain

If you are expecting and have been considering getting chiropractic care, but still have questions, we can help. Not only will we help you ease discomfort throughout the pregnancy, our adjustments will result in an easier and safer delivery for both you and the baby.

At Sims Family Chiropractic Care, we understand that it can be difficult and a little unnerving to try a new health care professional. No matter if it’s a new dentist, doctor, or chiropractor, most of the time you really don’t know what to expect, even if you were recommended from a friend or family member.

We want you to feel at ease even before you walk through the door for your first visit. If you’ve never been to a chiropractor before, or better yet if you have and have decided to switch to us, we make sure you know exactly what to expect. We explain everything so that you understand what we’re doing while we’re doing it.

For your first visit, we’ll do a series of tests to better understand what kind of health issues you might be having. Every practice member is completely unique and we take the time to understand you. The examination consists of a thorough spinal and nervous system exam, which includes checking the spine by hand (aka Palpation). We may also decide to conduct a test that reads spinal heat differences from one level of the spine to the other, which will give us a better idea of how the circulation in your back is. Further tests such as scans and spinal X-rays may be taken depending on your condition. Commonly, most patients receive three spinal x-rays at the beginning of their care. All of these tests are taken with up-to-date and modern technology to give us the most accurate results.

Your next appointment will consist of your Report of Findings, where we will discuss the best care that works for you and your body. We will take the time to answer any and all of your questions and if you have any concerns whatsoever, we will be sure to address them so that you feel comfortable and ready to start on your path to better health through specific, scientific chiropractic care. We look forward to meeting all of our new patients and will be waiting for you call.

And they all reminisced about how their teachers all thought they were hopeless lost cases because they did poorly in school or music. Would these accomplished individuals have been candidates for Ritalin today? Unfortunately, it’s entirely possible.

In our country, doctors and parents are quick to put their children on the drug Ritalin if they are having difficulty concentrating, are hyper-active or doing poorly in the classroom. However, most of the time the families are not aware of the severe side effects that can stay with their child, even long after stopping taking the drug. The list of side effects is lengthy, but include headaches, bedwetting, nervousness, nausea and blood pressure and pulse changes, just to name a few.

When a child is high energy or struggles to focus in school, it doesn’t mean they should automatically be handed a prescription for Ritalin and be announced “cured”. Looking to Ritalin as the only solution is a lazy and risky decision that should be thought about seriously - preferably before putting your child on a behavior-changing drug. There are better more natural answers out there.

Chiropractic has proven time and time again the power of the body to heal itself. I have continually seen practice members, children and adults alike, who come in for their “hyper” tendencies, and find peace and relaxation after receiving chiropractic care.

There is no template for what a child is supposed to be or act like, so why are schools, doctors and parents turning to Ritalin the second a child steps out of the box? Make the better choice for your child and bring them to Sims Family Chiropractic Care, where we will help find the right solution for you and your family.

Bring in the New Year Happy and Healthy

By now, you’ve probably hit the ground running for the holidays, which seem to sneak up on us earlier and earlier each year. The holiday season for most people is exciting and something to look forward to, but it can also tend to be stressful as well. So, take a minute to relax and read a few chiropractic tips to keep your holidays stress free and healthy.

There are always a long list of to-dos once the holiday season rolls around. Decorating, buying gifts, cooking for large groups and traveling can all create more anxiety than usual, which can be damaging to your health. When you suffer from stress or anxiety, it causes tension, which can then create unwanted pressure on the nerves in the spine. Pressure or shifts in the spine can cause subluxation and result in other health problems, such as bodily discomfort, headaches, and digestion issues, to name a few.

The International Chiropractors Association (ICA) have put together a list of health tips to help keep you happy and healthy during this busy time. They include:

-       Careful when lifting heavy objects. Packages, firewood, frozen holiday turkeys and large boxes of holiday decorations can all cause strain to your back when lifting and carrying. Remember to lift correctly, with your legs, not your back.

-        If you’re spending a lot of time on your feet for an extended period of time, especially when cooking, elevate one foot with a foot rest or stacked books about six inches from the floor. Alternating each foot can relieve your back and leg muscles.

-        Traveling during the holidays can be very stressful. It’s important to give yourself plenty of rest and extra time to avoid having to run with heavy luggage. Pack light and use well-balanced wheeled luggage so you don’t have to carry heavy loads on your shoulders or back.

-        When traveling use a pillow or folded blanket behind the small of the back to keep the arch in the lower back and support for the body. Sitting on planes or in cars for long hours can create pressure on the discs and joint structures.

-        Get plenty of rest! Fatigue alone can result in many health problems during the holidays.

-        When using a step-stool or ladder for decorating, be careful! Make sure you are stable and never stand on the top step of a tall ladder. There is an increased number of falls during the holidays, resulting in dangerous back injuries.

One of the best tips we can offer you for this, and every, holiday season is to take the time to come in and experience the health support of specific scientific chiropractic care. When your body is operating at optimal levels of health, you will feel the difference, and you will experience your friends, family and the holiday spirit in a more joyful way!

Now that you’ve taken a few minutes to relax and read these tips, go and enjoy the festivities! Happy holidays from everyone at Sims Family Chiropractic Care.

Healthy Spine Healthy Life

Yes, we are chiropractors. We love to help people discover that their bodies are ready and willing to heal themselves, as long as any interference is removed. As people begin to see how powerful their bodies are, it allows them to trust the innate healing process and rely less on “traditional” methods like medications.

It is normal and acceptable in our society to become sick and go to the doctor and get a prescription. If the first prescription doesn’t work, there’s always another drug to try, and so on and so on. When we follow this path, we are completely giving our power away to “the system” that’s biggest purpose is profits.

The reason the body seems unable to heal itself is because of “blockages” in the nervous system. The spine is the hub of the nervous system. By guiding the body to release the tension in these areas, the body becomes free to heal.

This way of thinking is a drastic change from cultural norms. It may take a while for the idea to flourish in your mind. Want more proof of the amazing ways the body rejuvenates every single day? Read this:
